Terence McKenna (* 16. November 1946; † 3. April 2000) war ein Pionier der Ethnopharmakologie und Philosoph. Einer der Schwerpunkte seiner Forschungsarbeit war die Erforschung des Schamanismus. Er veröffentlichte etliche Bücher vor allem über Bewusstseinserweiterung, verschiedene pflanzliche Drogen sowie psychoaktive Pilze, insbesondere über die Pilze Amanita Muscaria (Fliegenpilz), Stropharia Cubensis und andere Psilocybe.

Das Computerprogramm „TimeWaveZero“, das auf der King-Wen-Sequenz des chinesischen I Ging basiert, wurde von ihm mitentwickelt und bildet die mathematische Grundlage für seine Novelty-Theorie. Dieser Theorie zufolge stellt diese Sequenz den Verlauf des Aufkommens von Neuem („Novelty“) über die Jahrhunderte dar. Die fraktale Zeitwelle, wie er sie bezeichnete, endet am 21. Dezember 2012. An diesem Tag endet auch der Kalender der Maya.

Im Rahmen seiner Forschungen verbrachte er viel Zeit im südamerikanischen Regenwald und sammelte dort Erfahrung mit vielen schamanistischen Techniken und bewusstseinsverändernden Pflanzen.

Ebenfalls ist McKenna für seine vielfältigen Spekulationen über die Botschaft des sogenannten Voynich-Manuskript bekannt.

Nach mehreren Monaten medizinischer Behandlung erlag McKenna am 3. April 2000 einem bösartigen Gehirntumor. Er verstarb im Kreise seiner Angehörigen. McKenna wurde 53 Jahre alt und hinterlässt seinen Sohn Finn sowie Tochter Klea.

Timewave zero

Timewave zero, also known as Novelty theory, is a theory that purports to calculate the ebb and flow of novelty in the universe as an inherent quality of time. It is an idea conceived of and discussed at length by Terence McKenna from the early 1970s until his death in the year 2000.

According to McKenna, when "novelty" is graphed over time, a fractal waveform known as timewave zero or simply the timewave results. The graph shows at what times, but never at what locations, novelty is supposedly increasing or decreasing. According to the timewave graph, great periods of novelty occurred about 4 billion years ago when Earth was formed, 65 million years ago when dinosaurs were extinct and mammals expanded, about 10,000 years ago after the end of the ice age, around late 18th century when social and scientific revolutions progressed, during the sixties, around the time of 9/11, in November 2008, and with coming novelty periods in October 2010, with the novelty progressing towards the infinity on 21 December 2012. Important graphic points in 2009, appear around 19 April, 29 August and 23 October 2009, indicating the possibility of significant events around these dates.
